WotR: Skirmish

These rules modifications are meant to play WotR without moving trays. Why?
1. Skirmish game looks better on the table top.
2. Skirmish game allows better integration of terrain.
3. The WotR rule book contains all the profiles whereas many SBG sourcebooks are no longer available.

The rules are changed as follow:
I. Companies & Formation (p24)
Movement trays are not used.
There are no facings.
All models within a formation must remain within 1” of another model of the same formation.
II. Dice and Measuring (p27)
Measuring is from each model.
III. Move Phase (p32)
No model may move more than its move allowance.
All models within a formation must remain within 1” of another model of the same formation.
IV. Shoot Phase (p36)
A. Calculate Number of Dice
Shooting Directly: Each model with line of sight and range to a target generate one shooting die.
Accuracy Bonus: Apply for every 8 infantry models shooting directly, 2 cavalry models shooting directly, or single monster model shooting directly.
Supporting Fire: For every 8 infantry models, 2 cavalry models, or monster model in the formation that cannot shoot directly but has range to the formation’s target, an extra shooting die is generated.
B. Removing Casualties
Casualty models to be removed must start with the model furthest away from any command model of the formation. A command model in the formation is any any upgrade listed in the Command Companies section (p60) and any epic hero in the formation.
An infantry formation reduced to four models or less is removed in total. A cavalry formation reduced to one model it must also be removed as casualty.
V. Charge Phase (p42)
Choose Spearhead. The spearhead must be a command model upgrade listed in the Command Companies section (p60) or any epic hero in the formation. If the formation does not have a command model or a hero, then the closest model to the charged formation is the spearhead.
Move Remaining Companies. Change to move remaining models.
VI. Fight Phase (p46)
A. Calculate Number of Dice
1. Fighting Directly: Each infantry or cavalry model in base to base contact generates one die. Each monster model in base to base contact generates a number of attach dice per its profile. Each Galadhrim Knight model generates two dice.
2. Combat Modifiers:
a. Charging infantry and monsters: +1 die for every eight models.
b. Charging cavalry and flying monsters against infantry and monsters: + 3 dice for every model
c. Charging cavalry and flying monsters against cavalry and flying monsters: +1 die for every model
d. Battle Skill: +1 for every fight value higher than charged model for every 8 charging infantry models, every 2 cavalry models, or every monster. In addition bonus dice are generated for the difference between single hero model fight value and the target formation fight value .
e. Unstoppable Charge: +D3 dice for every 8 charging infantry models, every 2 cavalry models, or every monster.
f. Disordered: the maximum number of dice for a disordered formation is 1 for every 8 infantry models, every 2 cavalry models, or every monster.

Rumors Rumors- what is the future of SBG

Various sources have been saying that there will be a new book for SBG.  Which seems logical, the only source books still available are the Lord of The Rings journey books.  None of the other "army" books are available, not even Legions of Middle Earth.  The last one is important because it has all the tournament army building rules and scenarios in it.  GW generally does not release much on December, although that could change, so expect anything coming to be released in January at the earliest.

Interesting tool from Reaper on choosing color palette from pictures

It is called power palette and it allows you to upload a photo which includes colors that you want to replicate.  You can choose those colors and the tool will identify which reaper paints match in a best it can do color determination.  Neat tool, bigger the picture the better you will be able to replicate the color.

Scenarios from The grand Waagh Tournament

I Did not include the Bonus Cards.  What are your opinion on the scenarios?  Are they something that we should try to incorporate?

Round 5 – Own the Field

“One day, lad, all this will be yours!”

Layout
Terrain will be stationary, having been preplaced by the judges.

Starting Positions
Each player divides their force into four groups of as equal size as possible, with each group led by a Hero if possible. Roll for priority. The winner then moves one of their groups onto the table. Their opponent chooses either the group that enters or the table edge they enter from. The controlling player chooses the point on the table edge each individual model enters from. The second player then does the same, with the first player choosing the group or the table edge. Each subsequent turn another group enters following the same procedure. Your army may not reuse the same table edge, so by the fourth turn, all groups will have entered using different table edges.

Models entering the table may do all normal actions (move, shoot, cast spells, etc) but may not charge on the turn they enter.

Objectives
You must control more of the table quadrants than your opponent. You control a table quadrant if you have more models in it than your opponent.

Major Victory/Loss – You control all of the table quadrants at the end of the game
Minor Victory/Loss – You control more table quadrants than your opponent at the end of the game
Draw – You and your opponent control the same number of table quadrants at the end of the game

Game Ends
When one force is broken, roll a die at the end of the turn. If a 1 is rolled, the game ends. For each following turn, the die roll needed increases by one, so the second turn after breaking the game ends on a 1-2, the next turn 1-3, and so on. The game will also end when time is called.

Round 4 – Different Priorities

“Sir, I think the enemy knows our plan.”
“What plan?!?”

Layout
Terrain will be stationary, having been preplaced by the judges.

Starting Positions
Roll a die to determine who chooses their table edge. The winner may choose to deploy first and choose their table edge, or have their opponent deploy first on the table edge of their choice.

After choosing table sides, but before deploying any models, the player who deploys first places two markers; one in their half of the board and one in their opponent's side of the board. The markers must be at least 12”from the table edge and at least 6”from another marker. After the first player places their markers, the second player does the same.

Once markers are placed, the player who chose sides deploys their entire army within 12”of their edge of the table, then the other player does the same.

Objectives
Achieve the following objectives while preventing your opponent from doing the same.

You got any two models off of your opponent's board edge
You killed at least half of your opponent's models that count as heroes and/or banners
You hold more objectives on your opponent's side of the board than they hold on yours

Heroes and banners are of equal value for the first objective. A model that counts as both a hero and a banner only counts as one model. To hold an objective, you must have at least twice as many models within 3”of it as your opponent.

Major Victory/Loss – You achieve 2+ more objectives than your opponent
Minor Victory/Loss – You achieve 1 more objective than your opponent
Draw – You and your opponent achieve the same number of objectives

Game Ends
When one army achieves all three objectives, when one army is reduced to 25% of its starting numbers, or time is called.

Round 3 – Hold the Line

“None shall pass.”

Layout
Terrain will be stationary, having been preplaced by the judges.

Place three objectives down the centerline of the table, one in the center and the other two 12”to the left and right of the center objective. Objectives are clear terrain and do not affect line of sight.

Starting Positions
The armies will set up from opposite edges. Roll a die – the winner determines which player chooses their table edge. The opposing player sets up from the opposite table edge.

The player that chose their deployment edge sets up their army first within 12” of their table edge. The opposing player then does the same from their table edge.

Objectives
You must hold more objectives than your opponent does at the end of the game. To hold an objective, you must have more models within 3”of it than your opponent does.

Major Victory/Loss – You hold 2+ more objectives than your opponent
Minor Victory/Loss – You hold 1 more objective than your opponent
Draw – You and your opponent hold the same number of objectives

Game Ends
After ten turns, when one army is reduced to 25% of its starting models, or time is called.

Round 2 – Escort the Emissary

“Diplomacy is the art of saying 'Nice doggie'
until you can find a rock.”

Layout
Terrain will be stationary, having been preplaced by the judges.

Starting Positions
The armies will set up from opposite edges. Roll a die to determine which player chooses their table edge. The player who wins sets up their entire army (minus their emissary) within 12” of their table edge. The opposing player then sets up within 12”of the opposite table edge.

After both armies are deployed, the first player places their emissary within 12”of their table edge, and then the opposing player will do the same.

Emissary Stats

F S D W A C M / W / F
2/- 3 5 2 1 3 0 / 1 / 1

Movement: 6”
Equipment: Hand weapon, armor
Special Rules:
Diplomat – The emissary is not a military leader, and no soldier takes him seriously enough to listen to him. Though a Hero, the emissary does not grant a“Stand Fast”to nearby models. He does not benefit from any friendly special rules or spells that affect your army, such as Fury or Voice of Curunir. He is, however, affected by spells cast directly upon him and negative effects from enemy models, such as Restore Courage and Harbinger of Evil.
VIP – The emissary's mission is of vital importance to your cause, and your soldiers know this. They will do whatever is in their power to protect him. When at least one of your own models is within within 2”of him, he counts as wearing an elven cloak if one of your own models blocks the enemy's line of sight to him and he may not be chosen as the target of volley fire if there is another eligible target.

Objectives
You must get your emissary off of your opponent's table edge while preventing your opponent from doing the same.

Major Victory/Loss–You moved your emissary off of the table but your opponent did not
Minor Victory/Loss–You killed your opponent's emissary (or he flees) and your emissary is alive
Draw–Any other result

Game Ends
When both emissaries are off the table or when time is called.

Round 1 – Hold Until Relieved

“Help is on the way.”

Layout
Terrain will be stationary, having been preplaced by the judges.

Starting Positions
The player whose army has fewer models in it decides if they want to be the attacker or defender.

First, the defender places an objective marker anywhere on the board, though it cannot be in impassible terrain. The defender divides their force in half. One half, with no more than half the defender's Heroes in it, is deployed anywhere on the board. The other half is further divided into three more groups of any size.

The attacker then chooses which table edge to bring on their entire army from. The attacker starts the game with priority.

Staring on Turn 2, the defender brings in one of the groups in reserve. The attacker chooses either which group comes on or which table edge the group comes on from. No table edge can be used twice (including the table edge the attacker entered from), and the defender chooses the positions on the table edge individual models enter from. This continues each turn until all the defender's models are on the table.

All models off the table count as being on the table for purposes of Break Point checks. Models entering the table may do all normal actions (move, shoot, cast spells, etc) but may not charge on the turn they enter.

Objectives
You must control the objective while preserving your force. You control the objective if you have more models within 3”of the objective than your opponent.

Major Victory/Loss–You control the objective at the end of the game and your force is not broken
Minor Victory/Loss–You control the objective at the end of the game and your force is broken
Draw–Neither player controls the objective at the end of the game

Game Ends
When one force is broken, roll a die at the end of the turn. If a 1 is rolled, the game ends. For each following turn, the die roll needed increases by one, so the second turn after breaking the game ends on a 1-2, the next turn 1-3, and so on. The game will also end when time is called.

Cave Drake Is Done

It is done, but I am not really that thrilled with the finished product.  To me it looks ok, but I think the deep blue/purple really hides a lot.  I also had to fix the belly as it was to be painted red in the original color scheme I had in mind but I changed it after the first coat.  See the pics.

The Colors used on the main body of the drake : necron abys (GW) with a heavy wash of the GW purple wash, followed by dry brushing with Vallejo Model Color Purple with white added for the highlights.  The tongue was base coated with a thin layer of Vallejo Game color ultramarine blue and highlighted with magic blue adding white in small amounts.

Galadriel Done

Finally,  Here are the colors:
Face/skin-base coat GW Tallarn flesh and highlights with increasing GW Elf Flesh, lips were the slightest amount of Vallejo Vermillion.
Dress-base coat white, then Vallejo Flat Aluminum (like GW space wolfs grey ), washed with dilute GW Fenris Grey and drybrushed with Windsor and Newton Titanium White.
Armor-Base Boltgun metal, shade with dilute Vallejo Black, highlight with GW Mithril Silver
Hair-Base of GW Iyanden Darkson, highlights adding Vallejo Sand Yellow then adding a little WN titanium White for the final highlight.
Had a lot of trouble with the dress, no matter what I did I kept getting air bubbles in the recess areas with the Flat Aluminum and white layers that I could not eliminate.  Which is why I washed the dress part and did not apply shading with layers.  This is probably the best face I have done so far.  Faces are hard. :)
The Base is a mix of GW sand, Medium and Fine Talus from Woodland Scenics.  Topped with GF-9 Winter Grass and then an Army Builder Swamp Tuft.

more more more BFG and WIP and Dystopian Wars preview

Whew, lots of things today.  First off we have some BFG tokens that were custom make by LITKO.  To get 20 is $19.99 with a lot of options for color, shape and text.

Also the heading template that is large enough to fit underneath a BFG base and covers the 45 and 90 turns.
Next up we have previews of the Antarctic faction from Spartan Games Dystopian wars via TTGN.  I have been waiting for this since the fluff for Dystopian wars came out.  UPDATE here are painted versions.

And here is a WIP pic of Legolas from the Fellowship of The Ring.  I have been practicing my highlighting and shading with the plastic set.
Here is the finished product, based and matte varnished with Army Painter Matte Varnish.

BFG Markers

Joe discovered and got some of these from Litko. I think they are fabulous though a tad expensive as i already have 2 sets of cardboard marker worth from two starter set. Note though that there is tentative plans for all torpedo markers to be bases on 20 mm x 20 mm bases.

Disappearance of the Astronomican portion of GW website

If you had not noticed part of the GW website that relates/posts past articles has been removed.  Speculation about this has brought to the surface the idea that White Dwarf, the GW adverzine will be going digital, in a pay per year all access pass or a pay for a all past volumes CD/DVD deal.  I guess they could even go  a'la carte on an article by article basis.  It can still be accessed with a direct URL but has not been updated since march.

Citadel Finecast

So, now that they have come out, anyone have real strong opinions?
I know that I like the movement to 4 models per pack in the LoTR line.  We will not have to buy 8 blisters(anymore) to get an even amount for WoTR movement trays.  2 packs per company for elites is pretty reasonable.   I have seen some pretty bad miscasts but I think those will become fewer and fewer as GW catch up with demand and QA picks up, but maybe I am wrong.  You can check out Warseer and BoLS for a great number of fincast pics.

So, today should be the big announcement about metals-update

So, a couple of things, 1-today should be an announcement about metal figures and why they are being pulled from general circulation, I have heard that it will be called Citadel Finecast ( according to the German GW website ), which will begin on May 28th.

So, of course,  it seems GW takes this to mean they can increase prices.  Maybe the US prices will not change.
First news in british pounds i converted to US $

Starting from the 28th of May 120 products that were Games Workshop direct only items will be coming back on the shelves as resin or resin Hybrids. This new range “Citadel Fine Cast” range will be limited in number for the first few months, so we will be taking advance orders for them.

Full details for the products and prices will be available later today.

Rumors Rumors Rumors-metals to resin/plastic

Still much ado about nothing as far as GW is concerned.  Some metal Fantasy models are now up to 6-8 week shipping delays.  Same with 40K, although most seem to be in the 1-4 weeks range.    Supposed to be big news on May 16th about this, we shall see.  There is also rumblings of some large Lord of The Rings releases/things to come.  Anyone want to make some guesses?
Also added a widget that displays where/when and what we are playing during the week or weekend.

Don't forget about this , donate for a chance to win some 40K, and to support a good cause.

Rumour: GW to switch from metal to resin?

Plastics will stay as is but the metal models are being recalled and to be recast in resin?

Link

The GW games i play are predominantly metal: Warmaster, BFG, and LotR. I have an all metal SoB and Khand army already.
I wonder if these game systems will switch as well.

Apparently they are removing them in waves, some of which were already re-rendered in plastic, with the first ones to be removed being these after the break

GW releases updated book for Orcs and Goblins

Yeah, it's fantasy stuff.  The Aracknarok spider is pretty neat looking.  Sits on a 100x150mm base so I doubt it could be converted to a new Spider Queen.

Instant Mold quick project

So as I said last week I purchased some Instant Mold from Cool Mini or Not.  Here are the results from a quick, and I mean quick grab whatever I had on my desk and try to make a mold in 15 minutes quick.  This stuff really is pretty easy to work with.  I placed the sticks I received in 208 degree water for about 5 minutes, pulled it out with a sculpting tool and flattened it with my fingers.  Then proceeded to push these pieces into the flattened mold.  Waited for the Instant Mold to cool ( couple of minutes),  I then pulled out the object. Using  green Milliput I pressed it into the mold to make the copy.  I used two separate bases to make molds, one was simple and another was complex , to get an idea of what this stuff was capable of.  Also one of a Rohan Royal Guard arm bit like the gun they did in the video.  Overall, this stuff is easy to use and really does recycle.  I tried it and yes it does work when you heat it up again and remold, the arm bit is proof of that.  So two thumbs up from me.

WoTR quick start rules not updated, I am just in need of LoTR love from GW

Edit: not updated, just an old release that I missed at some point.  Sigh, we need some LoTR love GW, I am going through withdrawal.

GW have stripped down the quick start rules, no more spells, maybe something else.  They have included a new QS scenario and army suggestions though.  Interesting.  The two armies are Gondor and Mordor with others in the option list.  Starter box anyone?

Feeling adventurous, check this out.....casting stuff...

So, I know I said I would post more pics, but I became distracted with this little ditty from Cool Mini or Not.

Watch the youtube video, seems kinda neet huh?  Well, I purchased some and will let you know how it goes.  If all goes well I may even do requests. :)

Paper terrain

Check this site out. http://www.paperterrain.com/
It has paper terrain for houses and villages in a variety of scales. There isn't much for fantasy but what it does have is the ability to go from normal to ruins in seconds because inside each normal house is a ruined version that is only revealed when the normal version is lifted away.
